Extending the Life of Exchangers in Iceland

In 2013 & 2014, HydroPro assisted HS Orka with the supply and installation of more than 10,000 sleeves in their Air Cooled Condensers (ACC) at the Svartsengi Geothermal Power Plant, home of the famous Blue Lagoon near Grindavik, Iceland.

The ACC exchangers had experienced 100% through wall erosion and were in dire need of repair. The original (parent) tubes were 1” x 16bwg SA214 CS, and the plant chose SA213-304 material for the sleeves. Since the tube erosion was experienced just behind the tubesheet, 8” long sleeves with an entry flare and rear chamfer were selected.

The sleeves, or ferrules, were installed using HydroPro’s SleevePro hydraulic expansion system and blend rolled at each end to ensure optimal results. The SleevePro system offers great low-pressure control, allowing the sleeves to be securely installed without causing damage to the failing parent tubes.

HS Orka tasked HydroPro to install the 8” long sleeves to bridge the existing failures and prevent future problems, bringing every tube back into service while reducing maintenance costs, improving overall plant efficiency, and extending the life of their exchangers.
